Am currently employed by MTN Uganda as an administrator ISP services. I administer servers with which the company provides web hosting, DNS services, Mail services, proxy systems and network monitoring systems. These are services that that run the heart of several business operations, with the ever changing business requirements, it is important to keep abreast with new trends and to maintain high availability.  With a better understanding of network monitoring systems, i believe response times to failures is greatly improved and high availability maintained.

The company maintains two active fiber cable links to the international internet, it resells bandwidth to several customers over a number of platforms like fiber, broadband, 3G and Wi-Fi. All the clients are entitled to utilize the DNS, web proxy and mail services which i am directly involved in maintaining.  Most of these Systems (web, mail, proxy) are run on Solaris and Linux OS. Networking is largely run on Cisco IOS but there is a gradual move to Juniper systems.

As part of my job description, i am tasked to manage two major network monitoring tools, cacti and Nagios. These are critical to maintaining network availability and therefore a deeper understanding of how they work, how they are installed and how to manage them is essential.
